2013’s first quarter was generally kind to investors, as conditions were frothy in the US and Japanese stocks markets and mostly tolerable elsewhere. In this quarter’s Market Recap we discuss the impact of defense spending in the US and the Cypriot banking crisis worldwide.

Six years ago we focused on the widespread prevalence of leverage throughout different levels of the economy. For this quarter’s Focus Topic we reprise that subject, noting the success of “releveraging” efforts in all but the corporate sector, and discussing the implications of renewed leverage under rising interest rates.
